Open discussion with the audience on best practices for leading a company to gain value from intersection of: Mobile; Social; Big Data; Analytics during age of a fragmented Social Web. Al Nugent is former CTO of Xerox, CA and Novell. He led technology programs for some of the most data and infrastructure-demanding companies and their customers. As CEO of Mzinga, Al will discuss his hands-on experiences, while challenging the audience to understand and implement the ecosystem, resources and timeline necessary to gain real business value from Big Data, Social and Mobile initiatives. Fellow panelists will discuss the role big data analytics is playing in defining the needs and business opportunities of the Social Web and share customer use cases.

Professional Biography

Alan (Al) Nugent is the Chief Executive Officer of Mzinga. He joined the company in early 2010 as CTO-in-residence to facilitate the production release of Mzinga’s flagship product, OmniSocial, and serves on the company's board of directors.

A highly accomplished software industry veteran, he brings more than 30 years of experience in strategic management and technology innovation to his role as CEO.

  • Prior to Mzinga, he was executive vice president and Chief Technology Officer at CA, Inc., where he was responsible for setting the strategic technology direction for the company.
  • He joined CA as senior vice president and general manager of CA's Enterprise Systems Management (ESM) business unit with revenues exceeding $1.5B. As the business leader for ESM, he was responsible for the production and delivery of CA's award-winning Unicenter solutions.
  • Prior to CA, Al was senior vice president and CTO of Novell, where he was the innovator behind the company's moves into open source and identity-driven solutions.
  • Earlier, he was executive vice president, CTO, and CIO of Vectant, Inc., responsible for all technology design, acquisition, and deployment for all of the company's business units, as well as for all internal support systems and infrastructure in the U.S. and Japan.
  • Al also served as senior vice president, CTO, and CIO at American Re-Insurance Company, where he consolidated a diverse application portfolio and mitigated all Y2K-related issues.
  • Before this, he was SVP and CTO at Xerox Corporation, where he managed the Global Process and Information Management teams for strategy, architecture, methodology, and product delivery.

Al also participated in the formation of three successful startup companies in the 1980s and began his 30-year career at Hewlett-Packard Company.

Al is an instrument-rated private pilot and has played professional poker for the past three decades. In his sparse spare time, he enjoys rebuilding older American muscle cars and motorcycles, collecting antiquarian books, epicurean cooking, and has passion for cellaring American and Italian wines.

Al is the independent member of the Board of Directors of Adaptive Computing in Provo, UT and a member of several technology advisory boards. He is a frequent writer on business and technology topics and has shared his thoughts and expertise at many industry events throughout the years.
